If you are planning to leave for school in Canada, one of the first questions you will probably ask is: how much money do I need? The answer will depend on your program, school, province, lifestyle and whether you are going alone or with family. Tuition is usually the biggest expense, but it is far from the only one. You also need to think about accommodation, food, transportation, health insurance, study permit fees, biometrics, flights and other expenses before you leave Nigeria. So, what is the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria in 2026? For international students, EduCanada says average university tuition is about CAD 41,746 per year for undergraduate students and CAD 24,028 per year for graduate students. On top of that, students should budget at least about CAD 23,000 per year for living costs. What makes up the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria? The cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria is made up of several expenses, and the amount can vary significantly from one student to another. The major expenses include: Tuition Accommodation Food Transportation Health-related costs Study permit and biometrics Flights Books and school supplies Personal expenses Currency conversion and international payment costs Let's break them down. 1. Tuition fees in Canada Tuition will probably be your largest expense. According to EduCanada's current 2026 information, international undergraduate university tuition averages approximately CAD 41,746 per year, while international graduate tuition averages approximately CAD 24,028 per year. However, these are averages, not fixed prices. Your actual tuition depends on the institution, program and location. For example, a student studying a business-related program may pay a very different amount from someone studying engineering, medicine or another specialized field. This is why you should check the tuition published by your specific school before calculating the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria. EduCanada also provides tools for prospective students to explore Canadian programs and their costs. 2. Living expenses Tuition isn't the only major expense. For study permit applications made on or after September 1, 2026, IRCC requires a single student outside Quebec to show CAD 23,448 for one year of living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation. This figure is important when calculating the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria because it gives you a current benchmark for the amount you need to demonstrate for living expenses. Your actual spending can be higher or lower depending on where you live and your lifestyle. A student sharing accommodation and cooking most meals may spend less than someone renting a private apartment and eating out regularly. What does the living-expense amount cover? Your living budget generally needs to account for things such as: Rent or student accommodation Food and groceries Local transportation Phone and internet Clothing Personal expenses Entertainment Other everyday costs The IRCC amount is a financial-capacity requirement, not a guarantee that CAD 23,448 will cover every student's actual expenses. Housing and other costs can vary considerably across Canada. 3. Accommodation Where you choose to live can have a major effect on the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria. Students may choose between: University or college residence Shared apartments Private rentals Homestays Rooms in shared houses Living in a major city can be considerably more expensive than living in a smaller city or town. Before accepting admission, look beyond tuition. Search for accommodation in the city where your school is located and estimate what you would realistically spend every month. You should also remember that some landlords may require deposits or other upfront payments. Having enough money available when you arrive can therefore make the first few weeks much easier. 4. Food and transportation Food is another recurring expense that is easy to underestimate. Cooking at home and shopping for groceries can help you control your budget, while eating at restaurants regularly can increase your monthly spending. Transportation depends heavily on your location. Some Canadian cities have extensive public transportation systems, while students in other areas may need to spend more on transportation. When calculating the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria, don't simply budget for tuition and rent. Add realistic monthly estimates for food, transport and personal expenses. 5. Study permit and biometrics fees The Canadian government currently lists the study permit fee at CAD 150 per person. If you need to provide biometrics, the current individual biometrics fee is CAD 85. That puts these two standard application charges at CAD 235 for an individual applicant who needs biometrics. However, your overall application-related expenses may be higher because you could also have costs for things such as medical examinations, language testing, police certificates or services at a visa application centre, depending on your circumstances. IRCC notes that these third-party costs are separate from the government application fees. 6. Flights from Nigeria to Canada Your flight is another cost you need to include in your budget. Airfares can change substantially depending on: Your departure city in Nigeria Your destination in Canada Travel dates Airline Baggage allowance How early you book Because flight prices change frequently, it is better to check current fares when you have your admission and travel dates rather than putting a fixed amount into your long-term budget. Your first-year cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria should therefore include both your education costs and the cost of actually getting to Canada. 7. Health insurance and other student expenses Healthcare is another expense students should investigate before travelling. Some provinces and institutions have specific arrangements for international students, while others require students to purchase private or institution-provided health insurance. Your school should tell you what coverage is required. You should also budget for: Books Laptop or other study equipment Clothing suitable for the Canadian climate Winter clothing Phone plan Internet Personal items These costs may look small individually, but they can add up quickly during your first year. So, how much money should a Nigerian student prepare? Let's use the current national averages as a starting point. For an international undergraduate university student, EduCanada currently lists average tuition of approximately CAD 41,746 per year. Add the IRCC living-expense requirement of CAD 23,448 for applications made from September 1, 2026, and you already have approximately CAD 65,194 before adding transportation, tuition-specific fees, flights and other costs. For a graduate student, the average tuition figure of CAD 24,028 plus the CAD 23,448 living-expense requirement comes to approximately CAD 47,476, again before transportation and other expenses. These figures are useful for understanding the scale of the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria, but they should not be treated as a universal price tag. Your actual amount could be significantly different. FAQs What about proof of funds? This is one of the most important parts of planning your move. IRCC says students must prove they have enough money to pay for their tuition, living expenses and transportation without relying on work in Canada. For programs longer than one year, you must also explain how you plan to pay for the full duration of your studies. For a single student applying on or after September 1, 2026, the required living-expense amount outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 for the first year, excluding tuition and transportation. This means your financial planning should go beyond simply asking, "How much is the tuition?" You need to think about the entire first year. How much is the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria in naira? This is where things become tricky for Nigerian students. The Canadian amounts are generally quoted in Canadian dollars, while your income and savings may be in naira. The naira amount you ultimately need will therefore depend on the exchange rate when you make your payments. For example, if your school charges CAD 30,000, the naira equivalent isn't permanently fixed. A change in the CAD/NGN exchange rate can significantly change how much you need to send from Nigeria. That is why it is useful to calculate your budget in CAD first and then convert it into naira using a current exchange rate. It also helps to separate school fees from everyday international payments. Paying tuition is one thing; paying for software, accommodation deposits, subscriptions, online purchases or other expenses in foreign currency can create another set of challenges. If you need to pay for tuition abroad, you can use VitalSwap to send money at your own preferred rate to easily sort out your tuition costs. You can also check out this customer review from a student who used VitalSwap for their tuition and saved a lot on exchange rates. Can you work while studying in Canada? Many students consider part-time work when planning their finances, but it is important not to build your initial study budget around the assumption that you will immediately earn enough to cover your expenses. IRCC specifically requires proof that you have enough money to support yourself without working in Canada when applying for a study permit. Your first-year financial plan should therefore stand on its own. If you later become eligible to work under the conditions of your study permit, any income you earn can help with eligible living expenses, but it should not replace proper financial preparation before you travel. How Nigerians can reduce the cost of studying in Canada The cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria can be substantial, but there are ways to make your budget more manageable. Choose your school and city carefully Don't look at tuition alone. Compare the total cost of studying in each location, including accommodation, transportation and daily expenses. Look for scholarships EduCanada notes that scholarships, fellowships and grants are available through the Canadian government, provinces and territories, and individual educational institutions. Check your school's scholarship opportunities before assuming you have to fund the entire cost yourself. Consider shared accommodation Housing is one of the expenses that can quickly increase your monthly budget. Sharing accommodation may reduce your rent and utility costs. Cook more often Eating out regularly can make a noticeable difference to your monthly spending. Preparing meals yourself can give you more control over your budget. Plan international payments Students from Nigeria may need to make several payments before and after travelling, including application-related payments, school fees and other international purchases. Using the right payment method can help you understand exactly what you're paying and avoid unnecessary payment problems. VitalSwap's Virtual Dollar Card guide also covers how Nigerians can use a virtual dollar card for international online payments and services. A simple first-year budget for a Nigerian student Instead of asking only about tuition, build your budget around these categories: Expense What to budget for Tuition Depends on your school and program Living expenses At least CAD 23,448 for one student under the September 2026 IRCC requirement outside Quebec Study permit CAD 150 Biometrics CAD 85 if required Flight Depends on route and travel date Accommodation Depends heavily on city and housing type Food Depends on lifestyle Transportation Depends on city Books and supplies Depends on program Health insurance Depends on province/school Personal expenses Depends on lifestyle The table shows why there isn't one universal answer to the cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria. Two Nigerian students can attend schools in the same country and still have very different budgets. Final thoughts Studying in Canada is a major financial commitment, and the smartest way to plan is to look at the complete first-year cost, not just your tuition invoice. For 2026, current Canadian guidance gives international students useful benchmarks: average university tuition is around CAD 41,746 for undergraduate students and CAD 24,028 for graduate students, while IRCC requires a single student applying from September 1, 2026 to demonstrate CAD 23,448 in living expenses outside Quebec, excluding tuition and transportation. Your own cost of studying in Canada from Nigeria will depend on your course, university, city, accommodation and spending habits. Before you make any payment, check your institution's current tuition invoice, review IRCC's latest financial requirements and calculate your budget in Canadian dollars. Then consider the naira equivalent based on the exchange rate available when you need to make the payment. Planning this way gives you a much clearer picture of what it will take to study and settle into life in Canada without being caught off guard by expenses you didn't anticipate.
